Bangkok to River Kwai Bridge

Kanchanaburi is about 130 km west of Bangkok. You can travel by train, by bus, by car or on an organised tour — most options take 2–3 hours. Here is what to expect.

By train

Trains to Kanchanaburi depart from Bangkok’s Thon Buri (Bangkok Noi) station, not Hua Lamphong. The ride takes roughly 2.5–3 hours and arrives close to the bridge area.

By bus

Frequent buses and minivans run from Bangkok’s Southern Bus Terminal (Sai Tai Mai) to Kanchanaburi. The trip takes about 2–2.5 hours and drops you at the provincial bus station.

By car or taxi

Driving takes about 2–2.5 hours via Route 4 (Phetkasem) then Route 323/338. A private taxi or ride-hailing car from Bangkok is faster but more expensive.

Tours & day trips

Many Bangkok operators sell guided day trips to the bridge, often combining the Death Railway train ride, the cemetery and the Erawan waterfalls.

Duration & cost

Budget train/bus fares are inexpensive; tours and private taxis cost more but save planning time. From the Kanchanaburi bus or train station, the bridge is a short songthaew or taxi ride.
